Solving and Prevention. |
Algae
Wind, rain and leaves introduce microscopic algae spores into your pool. When this
plant life is allowed to multiply, it consumes chlorine and causes an unsightly, sometimes
slippery condition that can be difficult and expensive to eliminate. The best way to
control algae is through prevention.
How can I help prevent algae
from occurring?
Keep free chlorine levels between 1.5-3.0 ppm
and begin an algaecide maintenance program using Poly-Algaecide 30 or Algaecide 60.
Algae Treatment
Note: 24 hours after the treatment, clean filter.
Green and Brown Algae
This type appears as brown spots or a green slime or moss that clings to pool surfaces.
May also be free-floating giving a green appearance to the water. Add a double dosage of Shock
Treatment. Then add Poly-Algaecide 30 or Algaecide 60 as directed. Brush
and recirculate.
Mustard Algae
Appears as loose flakes on pool surfaces. Color may vary from yellow to green. Easily
brushed off but returns to surfaces within hours. Resistant to chlorine. Use Copper
Algaecide as directed. Brush and recirculate.
Black Algae
Develops as black patches on pool surfaces. Can be scrapped with fingernail and has a dark
green appearance if smeared. Can be removed with vigorous daily brushing and a triple
shock dosage of Shock Treatment. Granular Algaecide may be used as a spot treatment
in plaster pools only.
Red Algae
This actually is a bacteria, not an algae. It shows up on pool surfaces as loose, rust
colored specks or clinging, bright pink patches. Double shock with Chlorine shock and
a Pink based Algaecide.
Mold, Pollen and Mildew Spores
Found as suspended debris that easily pass through sand or cartridge filters. Starts as a
wispy sand colored silt and turns to a fine powder that makes the pool green and cloudy.
Use a Floculant to settle debris for vacuum removal to waste. Is there a fast way
to remove algae once its dead?
Cloudy Water
The murky, dull appearance of cloudy water can leave your pool looking uninviting to your
family and guests. Cloudy water may also harbor contaminants and stainmakers. If your pool
becomes cloudy, your dealer can help you determine the cause with professional water
analysis.
Causes of Cloudy Water
Contaminant Build-up?
When swimmer wastes and other contaminants build-up, the result is Combined Chlorine. Now
its time to shock the pool, see page 14.
Chemical Residue?
Have you used an unstabilized chlorine as a primary sanitizer? Switch to a stabilized
chlorines . They are all 100% soluble and leave no residues. Chemical Residue?
Water Out of Balance?
Take a water sample to your professional pool dealer. A high pH, high Total Alkalinity or
high Calcium Hardness will cause cloudy water. |
