Stains, corrosion and scale are
problems not restricted to the swimming season. But dont worry, proper closing
procedures are your pools protection during the long winter. Climates vary, so be
sure to ask your swimming pool dealer about any specific winterizing instructions for your
area.
1. Take a water sample to your Swimming Pool dealer. After
analyzing the sample, the dealer will let you know if any chemicals are needed to balance
your water.
2. Clean the swimming pool by brushing the walls, skimming the
water surface and vacuuming the pool bottom. Clean the tile line. Empty pump and skimmer
baskets.
3. Clean or backwash the filter according to the
manufacturers instructions. Sand filters may be cleaned with Filter Cleaner &
Degreaser.
4. Shock treat the pool water using the appropriate dosage of any
shock product. Also, add Poly-Algaecide 30 or Algaecide 60.
Then add a Metal Remover. Continue running the filter for several
hours to disperse well.
5. Lower the water in the swimming pool down to the level
recommended by the manufacturer for winterizing.
6. Drain water from equipment such as pump, filter, heater,
chlorinator, hoses and pipes as recommended by the manufacturers. Ask your swimming pool
dealer if you should protect the pipes and equipment with a non-toxic, swimming pool
antifreeze. Ladders, chlorinator (if off-line model) and pump/skimmer baskets should be
stored.
7. Cover the pool using a good quality winter cover to prevent
leaves, dirt and debris from accumulating in the pool. Winter Care for Mild Climates After
consulting your swimming pool dealer you may decide to leave your pool open during the
winter months. If so, the following are recommended at a minimum:
1. Operate the pump at least several hours a day or continuously
if the temperature gets down to freezing.
2. Maintain normal pH and minimum free chlorine levels.
